Reflections

Eager reader of history, mystery, classics, biographies, steampunk, lit fic, science, scifi, and etc. My reviews are mostly positive--I rarely finish or write about books I don't enjoy. My TBR is too high for that.

Reading progress update: I've read 26 out of 352 pages. Asparagus grows into little trees!?

Animal, Vegetable, Miracle : A Year of Food Life - Barbara Kingsolver, Steven L. Hopp, Camille Kingsolver

In this book novelist Barbara Kingsolver describes her family's adventure eating locally for a year. What I learned on page 26:

"An asparagus spear only looks like its picture for one day of its life . . . the shoot emerges from the ground  . . . rising so rapidly you can just about see it grow. If it doesn't get its neck cut off at ground level as it emerges, it will keep growing. Each triangular scale on the spear rolls out into a branch until [it] becomes a four-foot tree with delicate needles . . ."
